Linseed Oil
Raw linseed oil also known as flaxseed oil is extracted from the flax plant as a clear yellow brown liquid.
It has been used for many years in the paint industry as a drying oil and it is made up of long chain fatty acids which have double bonds that break and cross link during the drying process.
This gives a strong natural polymer that is ideal for protecting timber from cracking and drying. It was also used for making lino (linoleum) a protective floor covering.
Linseed oil comes in many forms with the main ones being raw, boiled and refined linseed oils. The boiled oil has driers mixed in to make it dry faster than the raw oil. Refined linseed is a clearer form of the raw linseed oil which is used in paints where colour is important. Sceneys supply the raw, boiled, pale boiled and refined versions of linseed oils.
