Tung Oil
Also known as China wood oil, tung oil is an old traditional drying oil that has greater cross-linking than linseed oil; hence it is used to obtain harder finishes with more gloss (through repeated application of thin coatings with polishing or buffing). It is the preferred finish for wood turners.
Pure tung oil is slightly thicker than linseed oil and has higher wax content. To thin the oil, many solvents can be used. Citrus solvent is preferred by wood turners and is traditionally used in a 50:50 ratio with the tung oil. This allows the oil to penetrate deeper into the wood, highlighting the rich colour and grain of the timber.
For larger areas such as floors, white spirits is a more economic solvent, with the added benefit of better dissolving the waxes than a solvent such as mineral turps. This carries the waxes deeper into the timber to aid the protection of the floorboards. It also gives a traditional old-style flooring finish.
Care should be taken when buying tung oil as many products labelled tung oil are formulations of tung oil with polyurethanes or estapols to provide surface coatings that are hard and glossy. Sceneys only supplies pure, unadulterated tung oil.
